Rail Trail Packages

At Rail Trail Planner we provide a number of customised, self-guided and guided bike riding packages. Choose from the following:

Guided Rail Trail packages with side trips

Our guided Rail Trail packages are priced to include all accommodation, breakfasts, bike hires, transport and guiding. Side-trips to the historic goldfield towns of St Bathans, Naseby and Hamiltons are an important part of our Rail Trail experience. If your time permits we also include a visit to Dry Gully Vineyard on Earnscleugh Rd at Alexandra.

We book your evening meals after discussing with you the different dining experiences available. Although we can provide daily lunches it is recommended you choose to buy these, including snacks and coffee, at the various cafes and pubs along the way.

Chilled water, energy bars and sunscreen are available from your support vehicle. You will enjoy a relaxing and satisfying time surrounded by beautiful scenery.

These trips are limited to a maximum party size of ten and can be booked for dates to suit your group.

These packages are fully supported. Minimum number for trip to go ahead: 4 people. Trips can be customized to meet your specific requirements.

Day One:
  1. Transfer from Dunedin Airport to Middlemarch.
  2. Accommodation: Rose Cottage Bed and Breakfast or Strathmore Bed and Breakfast. Tariff: $140 per couple. Includes breakfast.
  3. Side-trip to Sutton Salt Lake - New Zealand’s only inland salt lake. Experience the remoteness and rocky landscapes of the Strath Taieri Valley whilst visiting historic sites.
  4. Venue for evening meal: Quench Café.
Day Two:
  1. We transport yourselves and bikes to Clyde.
  2. Cycle from Clyde to Omakau (35km)
  3. Accommodation: Omakau Accommodation.
    Tariff: $150.00 per couple. Includes breakfast.
  4. Side-trip to Ophir – to include historic post-office, goldfields jailhouse and Daniel O’Connell suspension bridge.
  5. Venue for evening meal: Omakau Hotel.
Day Three:
  1. Cycle from Omakau to Oturehua (32km)
  2. Accommodation: Inverlair Lodge. Tariff: $160.00 per couple. (Includes breakfast)
  3. Trip to historic towns of Cambrian and St Bathans. Visit Vulcan Hotel. View unique Blue Lake and soak up the atmosphere of historic gold-mining towns.
  4. Travel to the historic gold-mining town of Naseby. Experience Curling. Cost: $70.00 per couple for 90 minutes.
  5. Venue for evening meal: 2000ft Restaurant, Naseby.
Day Four:
  1. Visits: Hayes engineering and Gilchrist’s General Store.
  2. Cycle from Oturehua to Waipiata (33km)
  3. Accommodation: Tussock Lodge. Tariff: $160.00 per couple. Includes light continental breakfast.
  4. Trip to Hamiltons ghost town and restored cemetery located on the lower slopes of the Rock and Pillar Range.
  5. Venue for evening meal: Waipiata Hotel 
Day Five:
  1. Cycle from Waipiata to Middlemarch (51km)
  2. Celebrate completion at Quench Café in Middlemarch.
  3. Taieri Gorge Railway trip from Middlemarch to Dunedin. Departs Pukerangi at 4:45p.m. - Arrives in Dunedin at 6:30p.m.

  1. Arrival in Middlemarch: We can collect you from Dunedin Airport or off the Taieri Gorge Train at Pukerangi.
  2. Visit cafés /museum/ Sutton Lake.
  3. Selected accommodation: Rose Cottage Bed and Breakfast. Taroff: $140 per couple (includes breakfast).
  4. SuggestedVenue for evening meal: Quench Café.
Day Two:
  1. Mt. Ida Adventure Tours air-conditioned minibus and trailer takes you to Clyde.
  2. Cycle from Clyde to Omakau - (35km)
  3. Selected Accommodation: Omakau accommodation.
    Tariff: $150.00 per couple. (includes breakfast).
  4. Venue for evening meal: Omakau Hotel.
Day Three:
  1. Cycle from Omakau to Wedderburn - (40km)
  2. Selected accommodation: Naseby Lodge. Tariff: $170.00 per couple. (Includes breakfast). Includes transport from Wedderburn and return to the Trail next morning.
  3.  Naseby Experience Curling. Cost: $60.00 per couple for one hour.
  4. Venue for evening meal: 2000ft Restaurant, Naseby.
Day Four:
  1. Cycle from Wedderburn to Hyde - (46km).
  2. Selected accommodation: Hyde School Accommodation and Eatery. Tariff: $170.00 per couple. (Includes breakfast).
  3. Suggested venue for evening meal: Hyde Central Hotel.
Day Five:
  1. Cycle from Hyde to Middlemarch (27km)
  2. Celebrate completion at Kissing Gate Café in Middlemarch.
  3. Stay another night in Middlemarch or departure. We can return you to Dunedin Airport or book you a Taieri Gorge Train trip to Dunedin

Super Comfort Rail Trail package – our premium tour (6 days)

These fully supported and guided six-day packages feature exceptional accommodation, fine dining, a river-boat cruise on the mighty Clutha River and a wine tasting tour.

These trips are limited to a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 people, and can be booked for dates to suit your group. Transport is provided in our 2014 4WD Land Rover Defender.

Day One
  1. Transfer by Connexions bus from Queenstown to Clyde where we meet you for the tour briefing over a cup of coffee.
  2. Clutha River Boat Cruise commencing at 11a.m from Alexandra.
  3. 1:30p.m. Lunch: Courthouse Café in Alexandra.
  4. Vineyard Tour: Black Ridge, Dry Gully and Judge Rock Vineyards.
  5. Accommodation: Oliver’s Lodge and Stables. Tariff: $235.00 per couple. Includes breakfast
  6. Venue for evening meal: Oliver's Restaurant.
Day Two
  1. Cycle from Clyde to Omakau and then to Ophir (38km)
  2. Lunch at award winning Chatto Creek Tavern.
  3. Accommodation: Pitches Store at Ophir. Tariff: $295.00 per couple. Includes breakfast.
  4. Venue for evening meal: Pitches Store.
  5. Admire historic cottages; we visit the historic post-office, goldfields jailhouse and Daniel O’Connell suspension bridge.
Day Three
  1. Cycle from Omakau to Oturehua  (32km)
  2. Accommodation: Inverlair Lodge. Tariff: $160.00 per couple. Includes breakfast.
  3. Trip to explore the historic gold mining towns of Cambrian and St Bathans.
  4. Venue for evening meal: St Bathans Hotel.
Day Four
  1. Exploration Day.
  2. In the morning we cycle 2km to Hayes Engineering for a Hayes Roast coffee and a tour of the factory and homestead.
  3. We then cycle back into Oturehua to visit the historic Gilchrists Store and the Golden Progress Mine.
  4. Lunch at Ida Valley Kitchen.
  5. Trip to historic and picturesque Naseby. Experience the game of curling at the indoor international curling rink.
  6. Venue for evening meal: Oturehua Railway Hotel.
  7. Accommodation: Inverlair Lodge. Tariff: $160.00 per couple. Includes breakfast.
Day Five
  1. Cycle Oturehua to Kokonga (42km)
  2. Accommodation: Kokonga Lodge. Tariff: $295.00 per couple. Includes breakfast.

Day Six
  1. Cycle Kokonga to Middlemarch. (41km)
  2. Celebrate trail completion at Quench Café.
  3. 4:00p.m. transfer from Middlemarch to Taieri Gorge train at Pukerangi.
  4. Taieri Gorge train to Dunedin leaving at 4:45p.m and arriving in Dunedin at 6:30p.m.

Day One
  1. Interclty bus from Athol Street, Queenstown to Clyde. Bus leaves at 7:45am and arrives in Clyde at 9:05am
  2. Collect booked bike from Cycle Surgery in Clyde.
  3. Cycle Alexandra to Doctor's Point (10km).
  4. Jet boat transfer from Doctor's Point to Shingle Creek (13km boat cruise).
  5. Shingle Creek to Roxburgh (20km).
  6. Selected accommodation: Villa rose, queen studio unit. 79 Scotland Street, Roxburgh. Tariff: $135 per couple (includes breakfast).
  7. Venue for evening meal: Goldfields Hotel Cafe. 130 Scotland Street, Roxburgh.
Day Two
  1. Cycle from Roxburgh to Beaumont (44km).
  2. Selected Accommodation: Beaumont Hotel. Tariff: $130.00 per couple (includes continental breakfast).
  3. Venue for evening meal: Beaumont Hotel.
Day Three
  1. Cycle from Beaumont to Lawrence (20km).
  2. Catch Connexions bus from Lawrence back to Clyde. Leaves Lawrence at 4:45pm. Arrive at Clyde 6:10pm.
  3. Selected Accommodation: Antique Lodge Motel. Tariff: $150.00 per couple (includes breakfast).
  4. Venue for evening meal: Clyde's Post Office Cafe and Bar.
Activities you can choose to do:
  1. Visit Gabriel's Gully. The site of Otago's first gold rush.
  2. Visit Lawrence Museum and Information Centre.
  3. Village walk featuring historic homes and buildings.
  4. Cafés and galleries.
Day Four
  1. Cycle Clyde to Omakau (35km).
  2. Selected accommodation: Omakau Accommodation. Tariff: $150.00 per couple (includes breakfast).
  3. Venue for evening meal: Omakau Hotel.
Activities you can choose to do:

Visit historical town of Ophir. It is a 6km loop from Omakau. You can view the oldest established Post Office in NZ. It is open between 9am and 3pm each weekday and is a Historic Trust protected building. You can also go inside the original goldfields jail-house located behind the Post Office. Also within this loop is the historic Daniel O'Connell suspension bridge.

Day Five
  1. Cycle Omakau to Oturehua (30km).
  2. Selected accommodation: The Crow's Nest. En-suite cabin. Tariff: $130.00 per couple. Includes breakfast.
  3. Venue for evening meal: Oturehua Hotel.
Activities you can choose to do:
  1. Visit the historical Hayes Engineering workshops and restored homestead. This is located right beside the trail 1km before you reach Oturehua. Admission is $15.00 per person.
  2. Trip to St. Bathans. Departure is frome Oturehua Tavern at 2:30pm. cost: $60.00 per person. Let us know if you wish us to book this trip.
  3. Visit Gilchrist's Grocery Store in Oturehua. This is the longest continuously open store in New Zealand. Located directly opposite the Oturehua Tavern.
  4. Visit the Ida Valley Kitchen Café at Oturehua.
Day Six
  1. Cycle Oturehua to Waipiata (33km).
  2. Selected accommodation: Waipiata Motels. Tariff: $145.00 per couple (includes breakfast).
  3. Venue for evening meal: Waipiata Hotel.
Day Seven
  1. Cycle Middlemarch to Waipiata (51km).
  2. Selected accommodation: Rose Cottage Bed and Breakfast. Tariff: $140.00 per couple (includes breakfast).
  3. Venue for evening meal: Quench Cafe.
Activities you can choose to do:
  1. Visit Sutton Salt Lake. New Zealand's only inland salt lake.
  2. Land rover Defender tour of the Strath Taieri Valley.
